Copper is an essential element for the synthesis of melanin, the natural pigment that gives your hair its colour. Melanin is produced by specialised cells, called melanocytes, and only in the presence of the cupro-enzyme tyrosinase, which contains copper at its active side. The first step in the synthesis of melanin starts with tyrosine, which is also an activator of melanogenesis (melanin production). When your hair follicles are not getting enough nutrients and minerals (or under the influence of other factors), they stop making melanin. As a result, your hair turns grey. Significantly, people experiencing premature greying were found to have lower levels of serum copper.
